Going green 'can reduce data centre costs'

21/12/2009 10:08:58

Many data centre owners are still not tracking their energy consumption - even though it could have a significant impact on their bottom line. That is the view of Roger Tipley, vice-president of the Green Grid, who says that until firms begin to monitor what they use they cannot start to reduce output and costs.

Mr Tipley told IT Pro magazine that he believes once people realise how much money they can save by going green, the adoption of environmentally-friendly techniques will be widespread and rapid. The lacklustre approach of companies can only be changed by one thing, he noted - cash.

Revealing one common mistake made by businesses, Mr Tipley said: "They may not separate the data centre's [energy consumption] from the rest of the building and so although they may have the bill for the entire facility they have to guess how much the data centre is using."

Companies looking to reduce their overheads by moving towards a green data centre may wish to employ technology by Eaton, which recently announced the release of a new energy-saving uninterruptible power system. The product is said to allow centres to work at an industry-high efficiency rate of 99 per cent.
