HDS expert is waiting "for something big to happen" in tape storage market

02 Feb 2010

An Hitachi Data Systems (HDS) blogger is expecting "something big to happen" in the tape storage industry in the coming years, amidst predictions that the capacity of storage solutions is set to rise significantly. Ken Wood, writing on HDS's Storage Muse blog, forecasts rapid development in the sector within the next decade.

Products based on the linear tape-open (LTO) 5 specification are due to be released within the next two months, all of which will be capable of 1.5TB and 3TB of compressed and uncompressed storage in a single cartridge with a top transfer speed of 280 MB/s. At roughly twice the capacity and speed of current LTO4 solutions, this represents a notable move forward.

However, it is the upcoming move to LTO6 that excites Mr Wood. Latest research suggests the capacity of this will be 3.2TB and 6.4TB respectively. There are also plans for 73ZB of data to be stored on a single piece of technology by 2020 - which could be just what the expert is anticipating.

Firms looking to make the most of the storage capacity they have may wish to deploy HDS's guarantee programme. David Merrill, the company's chief economist, said doing more with less will be the key to success in 2010.
