LifeSize solutions 'allow university to go global'
02 Feb 2010
A top university in the US is to go global thanks to LifeSize's telepresence technology. Instead of teaching only students at its Ohio campus, Franklin University will be able to communicate with scholars across the world, according to Ed Tech.
As well as traditional video conferencing, LifeSize's telepresence solutions allow organisations to create the impression that two participants are in the same room despite being miles apart. This is achieved with large-format display monitors projecting high-definition images and audio.
Describing the benefits of telepresence, the university's provost and senior vice-president of academic affairs Dr Christopher Washington says: "In practice, [telepresence] means our Indianapolis faculty members [can] fully participate in main campus meetings and collaborative projects without anyone driving the six-hour round trip."
LifeSize's standard video conferencing technology was this week labelled a success in rural locations by Kevin O'Regan, who took charge of a study at the American College of Radiology looking at the savings in travel made by businesses in isolated locations.
