IT bosses 'should consider replacements before technology burns out'
02 Feb 2010
It is "almost impossible" to predict how things will unfold in a data centre, meaning IT bosses should always be looking to replace solutions as they near the end of their lifespan, according to Jon Collins of Freeform Dynamics. The industry expert, writing for The Register, suggests over time the performance of equipment will worsen.
Mr Collins says: "IT has a natural lifetime, beyond which service calls start to go up and the costs of maintenance begin to exceed the benefits achieved in monetary terms."
Of course, it would be ideal if the expiry of a unit's lifespan could be identified as it was about to happen, but in reality this is unrealistic. As such, setting systems in place in preparation for the day existing solutions fail is a profitable, efficient and shrewd move, the expert states.
Research firm Gartner recently said that efficiency is the key to profitability for IT firms in 2010.
