Different plans 'required for long-term storage and back-up?
03 Feb 2010
Backup technologies tend to develop at an entirely different pace to most other areas of IT, so it is important to have a plan in place for each, according to Processor. The volatile nature of data centres also means that a constantly-evolving set of storage solutions is required.
Some smaller businesses deploy backup products as a form of long-term storage, the online publication states. However, this is a risky ploy, with many backup systems simply not designed to handle intense data. The most effective answer is to opt for different plans for backup and long-term storage, as well as specialist solutions for each.
For short-term backup, ExaGrid's high-speed, scalable disk-based solutions could meet many organisations' needs, coming equipped with byte-level data deduplication capable of achieving storage efficiency of anywhere from ten to 50 times that which would be achieved without deduplication.
However, longer periods of archiving could be catered for using Spectra tape or disk libraries, both of which are massively scalable to hold large amounts of data while having a minimal physical footprint to leave as much space in the data centre as possible.
