Adoption of deduplication will rise as firms seek efficiency, IDC suggests

04 Feb 2010

The constantly increasing demand for data centrestorage efficiency will drive the adoption of deduplication solutions, according to a leading analyst. A survey by IDC showed more than 60 per cent of respondents are either currently installing deduplication technology or intend to do so.

Firms with more than six petabytes of disk storage space value storage efficiency highest, meaning they are often more likely to be interested in deduplication. Deduplication can improve performance, maximise utilisation and decrease the amount of storage space required by firms.

Laura Dubois, programme director for IDC's Storage Software market intelligence service, said: "The tipping point for spending on deduplication solutions stems from larger projects around improving storage performance, virtualising servers and disaster recovery."

John Webster, writing for cnet.com, last week stated that he believes deduplication "will be everywhere" by 2011. He said the benefits of deduplication will become so clear in the coming months that businesses will soon be deduping "wherever and whenever" they can.
