HDS: Storage virtualisation will become mandatory

05 Feb 2010

Hitachi Data Systems (HDS) expert Hu Yoshida has suggested that storage virtualisation is set to become mandatory. The migration of data from one physical system to another is a problem encountered by many firms, with Mr Yoshida claiming such a process can take six months.

With data inaccessible for that time, traditional migration can be highly ineffective and costly, HDS's vice-president and chief technology officer warned. The obvious way to get around this is to deploy storage virtualisation. As storage systems get larger, an increased amount of data will share the same frame - until, inevitably, it becomes inefficient. By opting for a shared pool across different systems, this can be avoided.

Writing in his HDS blog, Mr Yoshida said: "Storage virtualisation separates the physical view from the logical view and enables most of the data to be migrated without disrupting the application."

Firms running out of storage space may wish to invest in HDS's Storage Capacity Reclamation Guarantee programme. The programme can help companies to reduce the amount of storage capacity they require by up to 50 per cent, according to Gartner.
