IDC: Western Europe governments set to spend $68.5 billion on IT by 2013
08 Feb 2010
Demand for solutions to support revenue collections and management functions is predicted to drive IT budgets upwards at governments and authorities in Western Europe. Recently completed research by IDC - the industry analyst - suggested that total spending will amount to $68.5 billion (£43.8 billion) in 2013, up from $56.6 billion now.
Although the recession is causing cutbacks in other areas, spending on IT remains steady, IDC noted. Pressure from the public to run an efficient government in some western countries - such as the UK - will lead governments to invest in the latest technology.
Jan Duffy, research director of European government technology decision support for Europe, the Middle East and Africa at IDC Government Insights, said: "IT suppliers who want to capture a share of that growth must take pains to ensure that their service offerings address the need for modern infrastructures and application capabilities."
IDC recently predicted that IT spending will increase across the globe by an average of three per cent, with emerging markets such as China and India recording expansion of as much as seven per cent a year.
