SSDs 'a popular form of mass storage'

25/05/2010 14:25:01

Solid State Drives (SSDs) have been described as a popular mass storage option for companies within heavy industries. Jim Handy, analyst at Objective Analysis, said the technology has a number of benefits for construction and manufacturing workers.

He remarked: "SSDs promise to bring a moderate improvement in battery life, faster boot times and a significantly more rugged form of mass storage." According to Mr Handy, the latter point is particularly relevant for certain sectors.

If a construction foreman drops his notebook on to concrete from two stories in the air then the storage can simply be picked up from the shattered computer and placed in another PC, he explained.

This means staff members can be working again within a matter of minutes, the expert added. His company recently revealed the market for SSDs is growing and it could see sales rise from 150,000 units in 2010 to 4.1 million within a five-year period.
