DWDM optical networking 'will see increased demand'
29/07/2010 13:43:02
Dense wavelength-division multiplexing (DWDM) is likely to see an increased demand in the optical networking market in the months to come, according to a report from business analyst Dell'Oro Group.
The research organisation notes the growing appetite for DWDM optical networking equipment among installers, which it predicts is likely to accelerate in the coming months.
A particular pivotal point for the market could come in 2012, when the analyst predicts that the cost of 100 Gbps wavelengths will dip below that of 40 Gbps equipment for the first time.
However, the sector as a whole is expected to be valued at almost $10 billion (£6.4 billion) by 2014, with 40 Gbps and 100 Gbps equipment accounting for around a third of that value.
Smartoptics' passive DWDM system includes a 1U mux/demux unit with 32 channels which can handle all wide area network and storage area network protocols, along with a 4 Gbps DWDM small form-factor pluggable transceiver with transmission distances reaching a potential 80 km.
