A report and forecast by Infonetics Research, a market research firm, claims demands for 10 Gigabit, 40 Gigabit and nascent 100 Gigabit optical transceivers will result in a market worth $3.3 billion by 2016.

The prediction is based on a number of controlling factors within the sector. One of the report's highlights was that the “...100G coherent transceiver market is set to surge as supply floods the market in 2012, led by network equipment manufacturers (NEMs)”.

Meanwhile, shipments of 10G SFP+ unit shipments doubled between 2010 and 2011 with further growth anticipated.

This is good news for brands like ProLabs, suppliers of optical transceivers and other components required to build data centres. They stock a wide range of optical and copper transceivers including GBIC, SFP, SFP+, Xenpaks, XFP and X2.
