Speaking with Techworld, Hitachi Data Systems’ chief technology officer for virtualisation, Michael Heffernan, has said that businesses should seriously think about storage systems within their IT environments, as increasing numbers of virtual machines are piling pressure on the enterprise storage backbone.

Scaling incorrectly is one problem many businesses are facing because it is making their storage inefficient. Heffernan says that many larger companies are going for low-end products designed for smaller businesses, which can lead to server downtime; a disaster for any company.

Heffernan noted: “The biggest challenge with network is you’ve got bandwidth, and you can keep adding bandwidth but there’s a limit, and then it can break.”
