Research from analyst firm IDC, reported on by channel magazine CRN, has revealed that the global switching market had a good 2011 Q4 with global revenue up 5.5 per cent and the EMEA region posting an 11.9 per cent increase.

IDC's director of enterprise communications infrastructure Rohit Mehra said: “With Gigabit Ethernet having recovered to a growth trajectory, and with 10GbE and 40GbE expected to drive incremental growth in datacentre and campus core deployments, the Ethernet switch market is expected to show moderate growth in 2012."

This stands professional networking vendors like Edge-Core Networks in good stead as it offers a range of gigabit Ethernet switches to its customers and has recently launched an administration and maintenance offering to help service providers monitor and maintain carrier-grade Ethernet.
