A survey by analyst house IDC has revealed that the consumerisation of IT means SMB employees are adopting and using advanced technology, particularly in the developing world.   Small and medium businesses in these countries are increasingly encouraging employees to adopt worker-owned technologies such as smart phones, netbooks and tablet PCs and related services, such as video conferencing. Vendors such as LifeSize have created videoconferencing software specifically designed for the needs of remote and mobile users.

IDC vice president Ray Boggs: "To remain competitive and increase efficiency, SMBs in developing countries are leveraging workers' own technologies. Despite the potential security risks, these SMBs continue to allow employees to gain access to the company network and related resources through their own devices."

Moreover, with wireless technology from vendors like Meru Networks specially tailored for mobile devices in wireless networks, this trend looks set to continue.
