I/O virtualisation specialist Xsigo has blogged on the importance of data centre ‘agility’ and its role in a recent Infiniband implementation at healthcare company Solutions Healthcare. Although the blog’s author claims it’s hard to quantify the term, agility simply refers to the ability to quickly adapt, add or take away from the data centre infrastructure in a stable conducive manner.

It means IT managers can quickly and easily add servers or fix application performance issues without allocating new physical networks for example.

VP of IT at Solutions Healthcare, Jeff Bills, achieved this using Xsigo’s virtual fabric – Infiniband. The company was registering massive storage growth, 60% year-on-year, due to its adoption of electronic medical records. It had already virtualised its servers and storage and wanted to virtualise its remaining IT infrastructure, in order to remain as responsive as possible.

Bills commented: “Infrastructure virtualization let us eliminate about 70% of our network components, and gain a much higher degree of flexibility. We can now define – in software – what servers are connected to which networks and which storage.”
