Hitachi Data Systems’ Hu Yoshida has written a blog post outlining his predictions for storage in 2012 – a year in which he believes companies will be uncertain about budgets, but that will see the size of data continue to expand exponentially.

Hu envisages issues such as the need for efficient storage (and associated technologies such as thin provisioning and dynamic tiering) and the triumph of convergence over consolation as a way of delivering savings, as important trends of 2012. Furthermore, he predicts that infrastructure and applications will need to achieve greater transparency to converge with open interfaces.

He cites energy efficiency as an important issue in the face of growing pressure on resources and government-imposed carbon taxes, but also points to big data as a continuing concern as it continually requires bigger file servers. Hu notes that is does provide the opportunity for big data analytics however.
