PowerDsineMicrosemi, the company which produces the PowerDsine technology, has reported a 2.5 per cent rise in profits for the three months to September 27th compared with the previous quarter. Net sales of $109.7 million (£65.3 million) were an increase on the earlier period of 2009.

Gross margin in the final quarter of 2009 grew 140 basis points to 48.6 per cent compared with 47.2 per cent in the third quarter. The upturn in fortunes could indicate that businesses are continuing to invest in Microsemi's technology as the importance of alternative power sources grows.

The use of PowerDsine allows firms to use devices, such as telephones, through the company computer network, reducing the reliance on mains power.

James Peterson, president and chief executive officer at Microsemi, said: "We are pleased with the improvements in our fourth quarter results and continue to focus on enhancing our factory utilisation and improving operational efficiencies".

Microsemi is a semiconductor manufacturer whose trademark products include system-engineered integrated circuits and high reliability semiconductors.
