IT performance company Riverbed has launched a product family called Granite; it’s designed to consolidate and manage edge servers throughout the enterprise. The vendor claims it’s done what was previously thought of as ‘impossible’ and separated storage from the sever. This allows companies to access data saved on remote storage as quickly as if it was saved locally – mitigating the need for separate backups and disaster recovery plans, and potentially saving companies up to 50 per cent in operating costs.

Riverbed predicts Granite to be of particular use to organisations that collaboratively work on large files. The vendor cites a company called GeoEngineers that regualrly creates large CAD files. Mitchel Weinberger, IT manager at GeoEngineers said: "The combination of Steelhead appliances and Granite allows us to eliminate physical hardware at the branch and the associated maintenance costs, solidify a disaster recovery strategy for the branches, and have backup processes run by system administrators."
