An article on Government Video points to a degree of anxiety as to the best method – and timeframe – for storing large amounts of data. Spectra Logic, the author argues, makes the decision of what data to keep and what to delete easier by introducing the option of storing everything.

The article points to three key issues in the storage of video data. Firstly, it points to the exponential growth in the amount of data being produced. This has become an issue when storing video data, as such data is often stored for a fixed period of time before being deleted, causing problems with access and analysis should it be needed in the future. Spectra Logic’s T-Finity database does much to remedy this as it is the ‘highest capacity data storage system in the world.’

Another key debate is that of disk versus tape. Whilst there was originally a move from tape to hard disk storage, many are migrating data back to digital tape cartridges. This is largely because tape becomes comparatively less expensive for large amounts of data. It also allows faster access to stored data.  “Being able to get my content back in 60 seconds is sufficient if I’m able to store ten times as much,” she says. “That’s often where the decision between hard disc and digital tape storage occurs.”
