Virtual Instruments has posted a blog on finding application performance bottlenecks within I/O technology. The blog, written by Jim Bahn, examines the relationship between the setting of queue depths and bottlenecks, warning that many companies are setting their HBA queue depths too high and they’ve, “yet to find someone who sets them too low”. For companies, this issue is easily overcome by implementing software such as VirtualWisdom, a solution which monitors SAN performance and can identify the effects of queue depth settings, preventing unnecessary CAPEX spend on SSD memory or storage ports.

Additionally to setting queue depth policies too high, the best practice blog also advises businesses to consider server configuration when reducing bottlenecks, as queue depth is per LUN.
