ProLabs Discusses The Impact Of Higher Bit Rates

Giacomo Losio at Prolabs has discussed how higher bit rates are expected to affect the pluggable transceiver world following the release of increasingly reduced bit rate specifications.

Although the introduction of 40 Gigabit Ethernet (GE) specification seemed “backwards” following the 100GE release, Mr Losio argues that there are good reasons to work on increasingly small bit rates.

With 25GE and 5GE in the pipeline, Mr Losio suggests that these bit rates over UTP cables could help systems to cope with the increasing bandwidth of the wireless access systems, which are putting the GE under pressure.

Although seemingly more efficient in every way, the 100GE interfaces are limited to the service provider world due to their high costs. According to Mr Losio, when it comes to evolving the data centre infrastructure, applications are capable of running on less than 100G of aggregate bandwidth and as such 40GE is a suitable alternative by price and power.

However, another issue with IEEE specification is the reach of the optical PMD, which is too expensive when it is developed to reach as far as 10 kilometres but is not as efficient as required if it is only capable of stretching 100m.

In order to address these issues, Mr Losio has highlighted the solutions to this problem developed by other companies including PSM4 MSA, which proposes the use of single-mode ribbon eight fibres, each of which transmits signals at 25G with a 500m reach.

This and many other solutions all agree that there is a need for companies to provide low cost 100G interconnect solutions to cover a reach of between 500 metres and 2 kilometres.
