Seth Engel is the network administrator responsible for A.D.A.M.’s Uniondale, New York offi ce. The company maintains four database servers, as well as FTP servers and MidPoint servers in a co-location facility in Elmsford, NY, but the IT department found that backing up the data remotely was difficult, time consuming and complex. Brad McCoy, network engineer for Information Technology at Purdue University, led the university's project to create a campus-wide wireless network that covers 140 buildings and is available to all 40,000 faculty members and students. Deploying 1,100 wireless access points is no easy task, because traditionally, wireless LAN installations have required operating power to be delivered separately to each remote access point. Given the massive quantity of access points that the team wanted to deploy, wiring each one with electrical service, along with Ethernet cabling, would be a timely and costly task.

NASA
In 2003, NASA Langley focused on the upcoming MER Spirit landing, scheduled for January 3, 2004. Langley was responsible for multiple aspects of the MER project, including analysis of Spirit’s entry, descent and landing data. Researchers at NASA Langley would have only weeks to assess the data, then determine and test potential changes before providing their recommendation to the flight software coders. The results of the analysis could then be used to adjust Opportunity’s entry, increasing its chances of success. He assessed the research group’s backup system, and realized that its current hardware was not up to the task of protecting the valuable data that would be traveling from Mars to Langley in early January.
